Traveller's code

Simple rules for travelling by motorhome, campervan or caravan with respect for the places you visit, the people who live there and other travellers. If we all follow them, these places will stay open to us.

  1. Park, don't camp

    • Before you stop, check the signs and local rules: the place and its access must be allowed.
    • Where only parking is allowed, keep everything inside: no awning, tables, chairs or levelling chocks outside.
    • Use one parking space and do not block entrances, roads, views or other vehicles.
    • On private land, always ask the owner for permission first.
  2. Overnight stays

    • Choose campsites, motorhome areas and places where overnight stays are allowed.
    • Arrive at a reasonable time so you do not wake anyone up.
    • Do not stay several nights in a row in a free, busy or small spot. If it is full, move on.
    • Keep a polite distance from other vehicles and do not set up large groups.
    • Avoid protected natural areas, beaches and the seafront unless a place is clearly allowed.
  3. At the campsite

    • Follow the campsite rules and respect the quiet hours, especially at night and during the siesta.
    • Stay within your pitch: awning, cables, chairs and tables must not take over your neighbours' space, and do not walk across other pitches.
    • Drive at walking pace inside the campsite and avoid moving your vehicle during the quiet hours.
    • Leave the toilets, showers, sinks and the chemical toilet emptying point clean after you use them.
    • Use electricity and water carefully: do not overload the hook-up and turn off the taps.
    • Keep pets on a lead and away from areas where they are not allowed, and leave your pitch clean when you go.
  4. Grey and black water

    • Empty grey and black water only at service points and campsites, never on the ground, in drains or in nature.
    • Use environmentally friendly toilet products.
    • Fill up with drinking water only where it is allowed.
    • Pay for the services you use, even when it is only a small fee.
  5. Rubbish

    • Put your rubbish in the right bins and recycle. If the bins are full, take it with you.
    • Never leave bags next to the bins or in nature.
    • Pick up litter you find, even if it is not yours.
    • Smokers: carry a pocket ashtray and never throw cigarette ends on the ground.
  6. Nature

    • Do not light fires or barbecues unless it is clearly allowed. Forest fires start very easily.
    • Respect plants and animals, and stay on roads and tracks.
    • Keep dogs on a lead in natural areas and always clean up after them.
    • Leave every place as you found it, or better: take only memories, leave only footprints.
  7. Quiet and good neighbours

    • Respect the calm of the place, by day and by night: no loud music, TV or generator.
    • Respect the privacy of local residents and other travellers.
    • Greet other travellers, share useful information and help if someone needs it.
  8. Support the local economy

    • Shop at local markets, producers and small family-run shops.
    • Eat at local restaurants and try the food of the region.
    • Campsites and motorhome areas keep these places open to us: use them and pay for them.
  9. Travel slowly, use less

    • Drive calmly and cover fewer kilometres: you will see more and spend less.
    • Stay longer in each place rather than driving every day.
    • Save water and energy, and switch off the engine when you are parked.
